The New Japan Cup, which kicked off on March 8, continued with the round of 16 completed the following night in Hyogo. As the tournament moves to Okayama on March 11, three second-round matchups will determine the first three entrants into the elite eight. One of the most notable storylines surrounds EVIL, who advanced to the second round in a controversial fashion. With help from Dick Togo, interference, a downed referee, a low blow, and powder to the eyes, EVIL defeated IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion, but now faces former champion David Finlay.
EVIL’s return to action at New Beginning in Osaka saw him force the War Dogs out of BULLET CLUB, provoking Gabe Kidd with a message for Finlay. The leader of BULLET CLUB since the 2023 New Japan Cup, Finlay hadn’t appeared in NJPW since New Year Dash, where he lost the Global title to Tsuji. EVIL’s comments clearly riled Finlay, and a tag match in Hyogo on Sunday saw EVIL retreat from Finlay, Kidd, and Gedo. With tonight’s main event looming, the question remains: does EVIL have a plan up his sleeve for his showdown with Finlay?
