NJPW kicks off its 2025 US campaign with Battle in the Valley at the San Jose Civic, featuring a stacked card with five title matches and top stars ready to usher in a new era. Among the highlights is the first IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship defense on American soil in nearly six years, as El Desperado defends his title against Taiji Ishimori.
Desperado, in his fifth reign as champion, aims to solidify his legacy after reclaiming the belt at Wrestle Kingdom. His challenger, Ishimori, has a storied history with the title, having lost it at Madison Square Garden in March 2019. Their rivalry, including a headline clash at Dominion 2024’s Best of the Super Jr. final, has been marked by explosive battles, with Desperado emerging victorious in their most recent encounter.
Ishimori earned his title shot after winning Wrestle Dynasty’s Lucha Gauntlet Match and further asserting himself with a January 5 victory. This showdown marks their sixth singles meeting, promising an intense fight for pride and the prestigious championship. Both competitors aim to prove the enduring relevance of the junior heavyweight division’s legendary “big three” era.
