WWE’s WrestleMania returns to Las Vegas for the second time on April 19–20, revisiting the infamous WrestleMania IX (1993), which had one of the most controversial endings in its history. A new Peacock documentary, WrestleMania IX: Becoming a Spectacle (streaming April 11), explores the behind-the-scenes drama, featuring insights from WWE Hall of Famers Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan.

At WrestleMania IX, Hart defended his WWE Championship against Royal Rumble winner Yokozuna. Hogan, WWE’s top star in the 1980s and early ‘90s, had left after WrestleMania VIII but returned shortly before WrestleMania IX. Hart recalls being assured Hogan’s comeback wouldn’t interfere with his title reign. However, after Hart lost to Yokozuna, Hogan unexpectedly challenged and defeated Yokozuna moments later, reclaiming the championship in a controversial finish.

The documentary trailer highlights the tension between Hart and Hogan, with Hart expressing frustration over the abrupt title change. The event, dubbed the “World’s Largest Toga Party” due to its Roman-themed Caesars Palace setting, remains a polarizing moment in WWE history. The film promises never-before-seen footage and candid reflections on the spectacle and backstage politics of WrestleMania IX.
