After two weeks of intense action, the 2025 New Japan Cup reaches its climax in Ao-re Nagaoka, where David Finlay and Shota Umino battle to be crowned the spring survivor.
Finlay’s path to the final saw him defeat EVIL, Yuya Uemura, and Zack Sabre Jr., while Umino overcame Great-O-Khan, Jeff Cobb, and Shingo Takagi. Umino, returning with a stripped-down look and renewed determination, has shown resilience throughout the tournament. However, Finlay is equally relentless, still chasing redemption after losing the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship to Yota Tsuji at Wrestle Kingdom. His ultimate goal is the IWGP World Heavyweight title, and a victory here brings him closer to challenging Hirooki Goto in Ryogoku—just as he did successfully at King of Pro-Wrestling last year.
This is Finlay’s second New Japan Cup final, his first being in 2023, where he also bested Umino in the quarterfinals. Now, Umino has the chance to avenge that loss and achieve the biggest victory of his career. Will he rise to the occasion, or will Finlay once again prove why he is the Savage King?
