The New Japan Soul series continues its journey, moving from Aomori to Yamagata on June 21, with rising tensions ahead of the G1 Play-Ins at Korakuen Hall and major title matches on the horizon. The main event features a six-man tag team match, with TMDK’s Zack Sabre Jr., Ryohei Oiwa, and Hartley Jackson taking on Shota Umino, World TV Champion El Phantasmo, and IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Hirooki Goto. Goto and Sabre are set to clash on June 29 at Tanahashi Jam, a live Japanese TV special, while Phantasmo will defend his TV title in an open challenge. Although Phantasmo is absent tonight due to a knee injury, NEVER champion Boltin steps in. The match also carries G1 implications, with Umino aiming to rebuild his momentum and Oiwa seeking to secure his debut in the tournament.
In a special singles match, Tomoaki Honma will face Hiroshi Tanahashi one-on-one for the first time in nearly 11 years, competing in Honma’s home prefecture of Yamagata. This bout continues Tanahashi’s “Final Road” series, while Honma looks to overcome a two-match losing streak against the Ace. Their rivalry dates back to July 2004 in All Japan Pro-Wrestling, where Tanahashi defeated Honma. Honma later joined Great Bash Heel (GBH) in New Japan, initially as a despised figure before earning fan respect for his loyalty to Togi Makabe. By 2014, Honma had become a beloved underdog, finally entering the G1 Climax only to lose to Tanahashi again, exactly ten years after their first match. Now, with another decade passed, Honma has a chance to upset Tanahashi in front of his home crowd.
