WWE SmackDown returns Friday, May 22, 2026, live from Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, in a pivotal episode that serves as the final show before Saturday Night’s Main Event (SNME) XLIV on May 23 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. With SNME one night away and Clash in Italy on May 31, the program carries heightened stakes as storylines accelerate toward both big events.
On the previous SmackDown, multiple events happened – gunther defeated Royce Keys and became the No. 1 contender for the Undisputed WWE Championship. To end the show Cody Rhodes physically struck Gunther, which increased the conflict between them. At the same time members of the MFTs faction are in a state of disagreement as Solo Sikoa or Tama Tonga argue. By returning to the show, Jade Cargill attacked the associates of Rhea Ripley – this event resulted in a six woman tag match that is scheduled for Saturday Night’s Main Event.
For the upcoming SmackDown, the only scheduled match is a singles contest between Tanga Loa next to Shinsuke Nakamura – this match exists because Tanga Loa surprised and attacked Nakamura during a conversation behind the stage last week. As a result of the timing, this broadcast is a significant part of the schedule before WWE travels to Europe for Clash in Italy.
