The New Japan Cup has swiftly narrowed from 24 competitors to eight, with the semifinals set for Sunday and Monday. Tonight’s elite eight will battle for a spot in the final four, while Nagoya also hosts a historic IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match.
Hirooki Goto defends his title against Yuji Nagata in a compelling main event. Goto, who won the championship on February 11 after a nine-year wait, now faces Nagata, whose last IWGP title challenge was over 13 years ago. Despite the long gap, Nagata, once known as ‘Mr. IWGP,’ had a dominant reign in the early 2000s, setting a record with ten defenses.
Adding to the significance, Goto was once Nagata’s attendant as a Young Lion in 2002, making this a full-circle moment. The match takes place at Nagoya’s Dolphin’s Arena, the same venue where Nagata last challenged for the IWGP title in 2011 and where he once wrestled to a legendary 60-minute draw.
With Dolphin’s Arena set to close this summer, Nagata’s storied career may reach its final title opportunity. At 56, can he surpass Genichiro Tenryu as the oldest IWGP Champion, or will Goto’s reign continue?
