WrestleMania, WWE’s premier annual event, has been held since 1985 and is the longest-running and most successful professional wrestling event in history. Its 40th edition took place in Philadelphia in April 2024. Created by WWE’s Vince McMahon and named by Howard Finkel, WrestleMania is considered the company’s flagship event and is one of the “Big Five” alongside Royal Rumble, SummerSlam, Survivor Series, and Money in the Bank. Initially broadcast on pay-per-view, it began streaming in 2014 with WrestleMania XXX. The event has become instrumental in shaping the wrestling industry and launching the careers of top WWE stars. It has featured notable celebrity appearances, including Aretha Franklin, Mike Tyson, and Snoop Dogg.
The first WrestleMania was held at Madison Square Garden, with significant editions occurring there, while WrestleMania III set a record for the highest indoor attendance at the time, with 93,173 fans. The record was later surpassed by WrestleMania 32 in 2016. The event has remained in North America, primarily in the U.S., with two editions in Canada. WrestleMania 36 in 2020 was held without fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic, marking the first two-night format. WrestleMania 37 in 2021 was the first to return to live crowds.
